Overview

The Dagala Thousand is one of Bhutan’s most rewarding wilderness adventures, taking trekkers through remote mountain landscapes where nature remains untouched and time seems to stand still. Situated in the highlands between Paro and Thimphu, the trail weaves through dense forests, sweeping alpine meadows and high mountain passes before revealing a remarkable chain of glacial lakes that give the trek its name.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVAL IN PARO

Step into the kingdom of Bhutan, where ancient traditions continue to shape everyday life. After your arrival, visit the historic National Museum of Bhutan, home to an extraordinary collection of sacred relics, traditional textiles and centuries of Bhutanese heritage. Continue to the mmajestic Rinpung Dzong, an impressive fortress- monastery standing gracefully above the Paro River, before settling into the peaceful atmosphere of the valley.

Day 2: Tiger’s Nest

Today’s adventure leads to the legendary Paro Taktshang, one of the world’s most extraordinary monasteries. The trail ascends through towering pine forests scented with incense like cedar, gradually revealing dramatic views of the valley below. Perched impossibly on a place where history, devotion and nature existed in perfect harmony.

Day 3: Genekha to Gur

Leave civilization behind as you drive to the remote village of Genekha, where the trek begins. The trail climbs steadily through rolling pasturelands dotted with grazing yaks and traditional herders’ camps. As the mountain air grows cooler, wide-open landscapes replace the forests, welcoming you into Bhutan’s untouched highland before reaching your first campsite at Gur.

Day 4: Gur to Labatama

Today’s route unveils one of Bhutan’s best kept secrets. Crossing mountain passes and vast alpine plateaus, you will arrive in the enchanting valley of labatama, where numerous glacial lakes shimmer quietly beneath the surrounding peaks. This remote wilderness is home to grazing yaks, soaring Himalayan birds and an overwhelming sense of solitude that few places on Earth can offer.

Day 5: Labatama to Khari Khewa

A rewarding day of exploration awaits as the trail climbs toward Khari Khewa. Those seeking an extra challenge can continue to a spectacular viewpoint at 4716 meters, where endless Himalayan ranges stretch across the mountains becomes more propound, creating a truly humbling experience in Bhutan’s High-altitude wilderness.

Day 6: khari Khewa to Tshokam

Traverse quiet ridgelines once used by yak herders and travellers moving between isolated mountain communities. The route unfolds across sweeping grasslands, hidden valleys and crystal-clear streams, with ever-changing views accompanying your descent toward the peaceful campsite at Tshokam. As evening falls, the surrounding peaks glow beneath the golden Himalayan sunset .

Day 7: Tshokam to Chamgang and drive to Thimphu

Your final day on the trail begins with a gradual descent through forests of juniper, spruce and rhododendron. Passing small villages and farmland, the trek ends at Chamgang, where your vehicle awaits. From here, enjoy a scenic drive to Thimphu for a well-deserved rest.

Day 8: EXPLORE THIMPHU

Spend the day exploring Bhutan’s Capital, where tradition and modern life blend effortlessly. Buddhist architecture, browse local handicraft shops and experience the city’s unique atmosphere before driving back to Paro for your final night.

Day 9: DEPARTURE

Transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward journey. Farewell Bhutan, Until we meet again.
