Road Trip from India to Bhutan

🕐 7N 8D📍 Phuntsholing, Thimphu, Punakha, Paro

Overview

Few journeys change so dramatically in so few hours. Leaving the plains of West Bengal, you drive to the border town of Phuentsholing and pass through the ceremonial Bhutan Gate. On the other side, the pace slows, the air turns cleaner, and the road begins its climb into the Himalayas. Over seven nights, you travel through the heart of the Kingdom. The route winds from subtropical foothills to cool mountain passes, past monasteries, prayer flags, rushing rivers, and terraced valleys. You begin in Phuentsholing, then cross into Thimphu, one of the world’s few capitals without a traffic light. From there you continue over Dochula Pass, with its 108 stupas and Himalayan views, down to Punakha, home to the majestic Punakha Dzong at the meeting of two rivers. The journey reaches its high point in Paro, where you hike to the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery, clinging to a cliff above the valley. Traveling by road lets you experience Bhutan as it unfolds. You stop at temples, stupas, and river confluences, and you see changing landscapes and daily village life that a flight would skip. Along the way, you enjoy local food, traditional crafts, and the warm hospitality Bhutan is known for.
